First Edition
Folio. [4], 416 pp., including contiguous pagination for three large double-page folding panoramic plates, illustrated Vol. IV title page, 100's of woodcut engravings, text illustrations & plates throughout. Recent half-cal over marbled boards, original spine laid-back down on spine, gilt lettering on spine, renewed endpapers (uneven toning throughout, some white, others toned, a few leaves w/ repairs to fore-edges, paper repairs to the fore-edges, and folds of the panoramic plates, minor loss to images), still a VG- volume. First edition, thus, of this bound volume of the first 26 issues in Vol. IV of Gleason's Pictorial illustrated magazine issued originally from 1851-1859. Vol. IV in 1853 was also the first year that the magazine had absorbed the Illustrated News of New York, and would later be changed to Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room companion in 1855. This Vol. IV features much of the novel by J.H. Robinson, set against the backdrop of Kentucky woodsman Simon Girty, who had abandoned white society to live with the local Native Americans. Of note are the presence of the often-lacking large folding plates, featuring panoramic illustrations of Commodore Perry's Squadron to Japan, as well as the views of East & West side of Washington Street, offering a Ruscha-style effect in woodcut engraving. Noted artists in Gleason's included Winslow Homer, and authors such as Susan Blaisdell, Alice Carey, Mary Lowell, Ellen Alice Moriarity, Marty Robinson, Sophronia Currier, and many others.
