He is best known for his Gormenghast books, which are often compared to the work of J. R. Tolkien. During World War II, he was briefly commissioned by various newspapers as a war artist.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with no noticeable faults other than a bit of discolouration to boards. Dust wrapper is very smart, with minimal edge wear to wraps. A bit of chipping to the top edge of the spine, with a closed tear to the top edge of the rear wrap. Age-toning to the margins of the reverse and the fly leaves and some age-toning and spotting to the reverse behind the fly leaves. Light offsetting to endpapers.Internally, firmly bound. He was godfather to Peake's daughter Clare and Peake illustrated two of his books; The Book of Lyonne [1952] and The Oxford English Course for Secondary Schools, Book One [1957].
