hardcover. Boston. 1925. January 1925. Little Brown. Reprinted Edition . Very Good in Slightly Worn Boards. No Dustjacket. . 276 pages. hardcover. . keywords: Literature England Joseph Conrad Memoir Biography Literary Criticism. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Joseph Conrad died on August 3, 1923; Joseph Conrad: A Personal Remembrance was published less than a year later, Ford having dropped most of what he had been working on, at the news of Conrad's death, to work on the text. People who were not Conrad's intimates reviewed the work favorably on its release, most suggesting that the text gives readers the most accurate picture of Conrad they are likely to get. However, both Jessie Conrad and Edward Garnett, in separate reviews, attacked Ford for inaccuracies and self-aggrandizement. The latter charge is no doubt true, and the former Ford pre-emptively evaded by claiming at the outset that the text was a novel -- a set of impressions -- rather than a biography, a genre that Ford detested. Ultimately, the truth-value of the text, particularly the anecdotes, is irrelevant. Ford's accounts of his collaboration with Conrad have been checked by both Ford and Conrad biographers and are essentially accurate. And his discussion of his position, and Conrad's, on a variety of literary matters, is instructive for any scholar or reader of either author's work. inventory #31725 Very Good in Slightly Worn Boards.
