First Edition
Hardcover. 326p., first American edition, hardbound in cloth boards and enclosed in the dust jacket. The book itself is quite sound, clean and free of any markings, but the metallic titling on its spine panel is very faded and dim. The dust jacket's spine is also sunned, with some dimming of letters printed red; the larger effect on cloth beneath makes little sense, unless the ink or metallic source used on the spine was of poor stock.

Hardcover. 326 p.; 14 illus. on 8 halftone pl.; 22 cm. Includes bibliography (chronological) by N. W. Pirie, p. [305]-18. `John Burdon Sanderson Haldane was born on November 5, 1892, a Guy Fawkes Day link with the dynamiting of authority that never ceased to delight him. On both sides of the family tree his ancestors were vigorous, mentally distinguished, and toughly individualist; from them he was to draw a combination of aristocratic self-assurance, intellectual integrity and almost endearing bloody-mindedness. The dark side was to be prpresented by an old-womanly fussiness, an irascibility which he took pains to cultivate, and an unpredictable rudeness to juniors and servants, as well as to men of power, which contrasted strongly with his underlying kindliness.' (lead paragraph) VG orig. brown-violet cloth in vg tan dj.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Slight browning to spine. Slightly rolled spine. Wear and tear to D/J. Browning to back D/J. J. B. S. Haldane was one of the most brilliant of British scientists, and one of the most controversial. A leading geneticist of the inter-war years and a physicologist who used himself as hjis own guinea-pig, he was also one of the most-read popular science writers since T. H. Huxley, a dedicated supporter of the Republican Government during the Spanish Civil War, and for some years Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Daily Worker. In 1957 he emigrated to India, where he later took Indian nationality. The author, who was given unrestricted access to Haldane's massive collection of papers in Bhubaneswar, has used these archives and the reminiscences of Haldane's friends (and enemies) in writing a memorable biography of a great man. 286 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences.
