Volume 1 is in very good condition, very bright (blue) covers and gilt lettering to cover and spine, volume 2 a bit of the gilt on spine lettering is worn away but the front cover is very bright and lettering is very good, the hinges on vol. 2 are both cracked (paper torn exposing mesh below). This two volume set unfortunately does not include the separate maps which were issued in a blue flexible soft cover snap-close case. Both volumes have previous owners name in ink (after "This book belongs to") at top of front paste-downs (inside front covers). Below name, also in ink in both volumes, is written "1st Lt Co I 148th Inf" and under that in volume 2 written "1917-1918". Both volumes have book plates on ffep, but they were placed by a later (different name) owner.

Gilt-stamped name of "James M. Cox" appears on the front baord of both volumes. Cox, who ran for President on the Democratic ticket in 1920, had been governor of Ohio during World War I, which makes this an attractive assosication copy.
