Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is the Temple Edition of William Shakespeare's tragedy, "Titus Andronicus". The book was edited, with a Preface, Glossary and Notes by Israel Gollancz, and published by J. M. Dent & Co. in London . This is the 6th Temple Edition, issued in November 1902. A drama of murder and dire revenge. Only in such a dark play could a character utter the following : "Vengence is in my heart, death in my hand, Blood and revenge are hammering in my head " *********************************** It's a lovely, petite book, measuring approximately 4" x 5 3/8", bound in dark burgundy (maroon) cloth with top edge gilt. The front cover has Shakespeare's family heraldic crest stamped in blind; the spine has the title in gilt. The fore- and bottom text-block edges are rough trimmed. Inside, the end-papers, front and back, have Shakespeare's heraldic crest printed in black and yellow. The half-title announces the series ("The Temple Shakespeare"). The frontispiece is a reproduction in miniature of a gravure depicting London Bridge at Shakespeare's time. This frontispiece is accompanied by a guard tissue, which has printed on it a poem by T. B. Aldrich ("Guielmus Rex"). *************************************** The decorated title page, which is rubricated (printed in red and black), features a central vignette of the angry visage of Titus Andronicus. He is bracketed by two daggers. On the verso of the title page is a quote from another drama of revenge: "Lust's Dominion", or, "The Lascivious Queen". This quote is not attributed, but it is thought to have been a play by Thomas Dekker, in collaboration with others. The rest of the book is lightly rubricated throughout with the act and scene numbers rendered in red. The book is bound with a silk place-marker. The leaves remain mostly unopened (ie not separated one from the other). *************************************** SERIES : Temple Shakespeare / TITLE : Shakespeare'sTragedy of Titus Andronicus / AUTHOR : William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) / EDITOR, PREFACE, GLOSSARY, NOTES : Israel Gollancz (1864 - 1930) / TEXTUAL QUOTES : T. Top edge gilt, fore-and bottom edges rough-trimmed. Bound with silk place-marker. ************************************* CONDITION VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Gilt lettering on spine is bright; top edge gilt is slightly rubbed but basically fairly bright; the rear cover has a wide, but transparent, water discoloration which has little overt effect; else the cover has strong color and only slightly bumped corner tips. / BINDING -- Most of the leaves have not been separated; the whole is solid with no detached or loose leaves. / INTERIOR -- There are a few small 'tea' stains , and some of the leaves are toned; frontispiece and guard tissue are toned - else the interior is clean and presentable with no marking, no writing and no signatures.

Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, New York: 15 September - 21 November 1998] ; "The reputation of William Hogarth (1697-1764) rests largely on his pictorial stories, a series of engravings that he called "modern Moral Subjects," the most famous being the Harlot's and the Rake's Progress. In this catalog, David Bindman works backward from Hogarth's reputation today--where he is seen by some as a conservative populist and by others as a political radical--and examines his impact on various artists over the past three centuries. Bindman also sets Hogarth's prints firmly in their historical context, discussing the artist's public and the different influences on his work, from Roman satire to the politics of the day. The result is an engaging and insightful portrayal not only of William Hogarth, but also of the middle years of the eighteenth century. Art lovers will enjoy this book, but so too will anyone with an interest in the literature and history of the mid-eighteenth century. " ; FINE. Book.
