A l'écrivain Pierre-François Tissot (1768-1854). « On remettra chez vous, avec ma lettre, Monsieur, deux exemplaires de quelques vers que je viens de faire sur la mort d'un de mes plus anciens amis. Cette petite pièce n'est rien : mais personne ne peut apprécier mieux que vous le sentiment qui me l'a imprimée. J'espère que votre santé est meilleure que l'année dernière ; la mienne se contient bien difficilement malgré le repos de la campagne, ou, peut-être à cause de ce repos. Je passerai tout l'hiver prochain à Paris ; j'y aurai souvent de petites réunions d'amis, et ce sera avec grand plaisir, Monsieur, que je vous verrai en faire partie.[?] Constance de Salm ». Cette pièce de vers est en fait sur son grand ami le peintre Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) mort quelques mois plus tôt. Elle fut imprimée par Didot et ne fait que 8 pages. [373].

Pipelet". bon Constance Pipelet [la future princesse de Salm-Dyck était alors mariée à Pipelet de Leury] dément être l'auteur de vers sur La Mort d'un Chat. «Je n'en ai jamais fait qui eussent ce titre, sans doute, vous vous trompés, ou quelqu'un se sera amusé à contrefaire ma signature». Elle annonce ceux lus au Lycée républicain. «Je me ferai un vrai plaisir d'en joindre ici quelques tirades», même si la Décade philosophique vient de les publier en partie. Elle propose d'en différer de deux jours la publication. «Cette pièce de vers va paraître imprimée séparément ; vous pourriés à la fois l'annoncer et en rendre compte dans votre journal, ce qui me serait doublement agréable : dans tous les cas, je vous adresserai un exemplaire [.]». [Elle connut une grande popularité sous le Directoire ; surnommée "la Muse de la Raison" ou "le Boileau des femmes" par Marie-Joseph Chénier, elle fut aussi la première femme admise au Lycée, où elle lut plusieurs éloges en prose, notamment ceux de Sedaine (1797)]. Les nombreuses citations de mes Pensées ne m'ont pas été moins agréables ; elles sont particulièrement bien choisies [.]». Elle évoque ensuite les autres critiques parues dans les autres journaux et ses projets d'écriture. «Celui du Moniteur universel me paraît couronner l'oeuvre, et je n'en désire pas plus, cette fois. Je me réserve, d'ailleurs, la bonne volonté des journaux pour mes Oeuvres complètes qui paraîtront l'hiver prochain, et pour un autre ouvrage, mes Mémoires, auxquels je travaille depuis plus d'un an. Ils auront, je crois, quelqu'intérêt ; car ils seront un tableau fidèle de la société, et de la littérature de notre temps. Quant à la politique, Dieu merci, je ne m'en suis jamais mêlée activement ; mais, depuis 89, j'ai vu et jugé toutes les révolutions, et j'en parlerai, comme dans plusieurs de mes ouvrages, sous le rapport de l'opinion, et, aussi, sous celui de la vérité des faits que l'on altère de plus en plus dans une foule d'écrits.
