Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Mervyn Peake (illustrator). First Thus. A re-issue of the Folio Society edition, reprinted by photo litho in 1974. As stated on the printer's page: 'Distributed for the Folio Press by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.' The original Folio Society edition was published in 1948. With black and orange line illustrations by Mervyn Peake in the text, and a fourteen-page introduction by John Hampden, as in the first Folio edition. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and beautiful gilt illustrations to both boards. The boards are clean and unmarked, with no bumps or creases. No reading lean. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean. No foxing. ***Unusually, this copy has not one but two wrappers as follows: a clear acetate cover with yellow paper flaps (the flaps are partially detached), and a complete black and yellow printed dustwrapper. Both wrappers are corner price-clipped, but are otherwise complete. ***148 pages. 225mm x 150mm. ***The unique design of the book with the contrasting pale yellow and black cloth encapsulates the dual identity of the main character in Stevenson's famous novel. ***A re-issue of the Folio Society edition, reprinted by photo litho in 1974, with the original line drawings by Mervyn Peake. The book is in very nice collectable condition, and is very unusual having the two wrappers. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
