Octavo, blue & khaki cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 314 pp. Near-Fine, in a Near-Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: In this fascinating, complete and dramatic account of President James Madison's plot to wrest the territory of Florida from Spain in 1811 -- a true-to-life historical thriller -- Joseph Burkholder Smith demonstrates with erudition, wit and historical perspective that long before Vietnam and Watergate this republic's Founding Fathers practiced their own covert manipulation of the Americacn public and forieng governments in near-Nixonian proportions. In what was to become the United States' first major covert action, an historic precursor to Watergate, President Madison attempted to instigate a popular uprising against the Spanish; to use the press against them through letters bought from a British doubleagent; and, finally, when all failed, to disavow the entire Florida fiasco. play-by-play, the enitre operation with its "secret agenda" is here. As Joseph Burkholder Smith says, "history lives by analogy," and The Plot ot Steal Florida goes far in revealing the seeds of modern day subversion and cover-up at the highest reaches of government. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing. 24 cm, 314, ink notation front endpaper, underlining on p. 13, DJ edges worn, edges & endpapers soiled, review slip & pub ephemera laid in. How President James Madison manipulated public opinion and foreign governments to wrest Florida from Spain. The first war in our history which featured articulate, strident, determined and able protesters, and the first war we clearly didn't win, was the very first war we fought after winning independence. It was the War of 1812.A true-to-life historical thriller. In the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, then-Secretary of State James Madison and his assistant, James Monroe, connived in making the eastern boundaries of that territory uncertain. They were plotting to eventually use the pretext of unclear boundaries as part of the justification for seizing "the Floridas." Propaganda operations occurred during President James Madison's Florida intrigues: "a preliminary propaganda phase -- working up excitement in and about the target -- then the organizing of a 'patriot government' opposed to the group we wished to get rid of, then an armed attack by the 'patriots' on the nearest legitimate authority. then an appeal to the United States government to assume control and restore 'order,' a call which the United States government usually answered.".

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: fair. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 22 cm, 448 pages, index, DJ somewhat soiled and worn: small edge tears/chips, larger piece missing at bottom of front DJ. The author was a Harvard graduate who served as a Japanese language specialist during World War II and during the Korean War as an operations officer in covert action with the CIA. His 20-year career in covert operations included tours of duty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Venezuela, Argentina and Mexico. The author was a high-ranking officer in the CIA, serving for 25 years from 1950 through the collapse of the Vietnam War. He wrote two books, Portrait of a Cold Warrior, about his life and work in the CIA, and The Plot to Steal Florida, portraying history and intrigue during the James Madison era. This is alleged to be the only CIA memoir which was not submitted for vetting and changes by the CIA prior to publication; the rules were changed after (and because of) its publication. There are rumors that many copies of the original hardback edition were bought up and destroyed.
