The author's ninth novel. A Strangeness in My Mind is about the fictional character of Mevlut Karatas, who moves from a small Anatolian village to the bustling metropolis of Istanbul, Turkey. There, he tries to make a living by selling the Turkish drink, boza, and falls in love with a young womanl. In the passing years, financial success still eludes Karatas, and he is troubled by the eponymous "strangeness" in his mind, a "sensation that makes him feel different from everyone else." This novel is a family epic as well as a rumination upon the significant, and sometimes painful, changes Istanbul underwent from 1969-2012. Orhan Pamuk (b. 1952) is a Turkish novelist, screenwriter, and intellectual. His literary works often address the tensions between Eastern and Western cultures. Pamuk won the 2006 Nobel Prize for discovering "new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures" as seen in his work. Translated from the original Turkish by Ekin Oklap.
