First Edition
FIRST EDITION. including half-title. Title in red and black. Original cloth-backed patterned boards, yellow lettering to spine. A fine copy. First edition of this collection of poems. "As a physician I was with the sick and dying daily - and have never become hardened to seeing human suffering. And when the child, the teenager, and all the others who suffer disability or death before their proper time, turned to me to help them, when the powers of medical science failed, I wept with them. And I still do in my poems."Miller (1907-71), a scientific researcher and teacher of medicine, studied chemical engineering at MIT, and medicine at Harvard. During World War II, he worked for the Public Health Service, answering all President Roosevelt's mail that pertained to medical questions. This contact with the public's health questions led him to write his popular Complete Medical Guide, essentially a medical book for the layperson. He helped in the development of kidney transplant surgery, and conducted valuable research on atherosclerosis. It was after suffering from serious health problems, including sarcoidosis and pneumonia, that Miller began to write poetry.

THe results were so moving and impressive that Wolfe had 2,000 copies printed at his own expense, while all the profits from Doubleday's edition went directly to the men ; "We cannot state too emphatically that this books is presented not as a literary effort but as a series of social documents."--foreword ; "If a foreigner should ask me what Americans were like in 1946, I would hand him this book. Naturally it is not the whole story. It is only the story of a fairly small group of young men among those most hurt in body and mind by the accidents of war.
