This work has all the fascination of a romance, yet it is both biographical and historical. The events occur in the time of Queen Elizabeth and with the adventures of the hero of the story are interwoven the lives of many heroic men, to whom the author believes that England owes much of her naval and commercial glory. To give these persons their just due seems t be the design of the writer. The book is ably written in commemoration of these men of Devon- "Drakes and Hawkins, Gilberts and Raleighs, Grenvilles and Oxenhams, their voyages and battles, their heroic lives and heroic deaths." The self-sacrifice and heroism, the faith and valor depicted n these pages with the romance connected with it, invest the story with more than ordinary interest, for we consider it a work of uncommon vigor and power. A clean very presentable copy. 10 color plates.
