(illustrator). 2nd Edition. 241 pages with 126 pages being the tale of the "talkative friendly bear" and the other half of the book page 127 to 241 with the tale of a London Doll from her making and then adventures even with Punch and Judy. Original cloth, original yellow endpaper, prize label inside cover "Ernest Hammond. For Good Conduct, Arundel School" signed by W. Crick? Vicar. AEG. Small octavo. A lovely clean copy of this scarce work originally published in 1846 and then again in the 20th century. This one dates to about 1870-80. *Little known author today, but his poem "Orion" was very highly regarded and he was the first to encourage Elizabeth Barrett Browning and see the merits of Tennyson and Keats. Having sailed to Australia he also has the dubious reputation of being the founding father of the Australian Wine Industry and a company he began is still operating from the same premises. There are two biographies of him. interesting character and this book was the first to depict a friendly talking bear.

Slim 8vo, pp. [iv], 137 [138 adverts], marbled boards; all before title-page removed, front cover stained. "In 1843 Horne published the work for which he is best-known, the three-book epic Orion. This poem, broadly of the Spasmodic school, more credibly imagines the torments and distractions which befall genius than the precise nature of its enduring achievements. It was glowingly reviewed (by, among others, Edgar Allan Poe), and its public reputation was cannily enhanced by Horne's decision to price copies at a farthing, gaining him the nickname the Farthing Poet" (Oxford DNB).
