Certo deve essersi trattato di un incidente, ma avvenuto dove e quando, e soprattutto perchè. Questo deve scoprire il Comandante Blish. Questi sono gli ordini ai quali l'ufficiale intende obbedire ad ogni costo. E poichè lo spazio non è abitato da alcuna forma di vita intelligente, basta seguire alla lettera il Regolamento, è sufficiente che tutti i membri dell'equipaggio si assoggettino alle regole della disciplina, perchè tutto vada bene. Il Comandante Blish ne è fermamente convinto, così come è convinto che nel cosmo non esistano altri esseri intelligenti oltre all'uomo. Il Regolamento lo dice, e chi ha fatto il Regolamento si è basato su secoli di esplorazioni spaziali durante i quali effettivamente non è mai stata riscontrata l'esistenza di altre creature pensanti. Ma tutte le leggi di una disciplina impostata su un presupposto sbagliato, non servono più quando la realtà sovverte quei dogmi.
