About the Author:
Edmundo de Amicis. Nació en Oneglia en 1846, y fue el menor de cinco hermanos. Su padre se dedicaba al comercio de sal y tabaco; alternaba su trabajo con lecciones que impartía a sus hijos. Apasionado patriota, De Amicis estudió en un liceo en Turín y luego entró al Ejército, donde fue nombrado oficial. Como tal asistió a la batalla de Ustoza, en 1866.
Durante su carrera militar aceptó la dirección del diario L'Italia Militare que se publicaba en Florencia, hasta que consiguió dedicarse por completo a sus trabajos literarios. En 1868 escribió La vida militar y varios libros de lugares y costumbres, que tuvieron gran éxito. En 1883 se hizo famoso por su novela Los amigos. Además de Corazón (1886), De Amicis trató el tema de la escuela y la patria en varios libros. Al parecer, Corazón está inspirado tanto en su vida como en la de sus hijos y sus respectivos compañeros de clase. De Amicis murió en Bordighera, en 1908.

In 1868 he wrote The Military Life and several books of places and customs, which were very successful. In 1883 he became famous for his novel Friends. In addition to Heart (1886), De Amicis addressed the theme of school and country in several books. Apparently, Heart is inspired both in his life as in that of his children and their respective classmates. De Amicis died in Bordighera, in 1908.
