About the Author:
Susan Schaefer Bernardo is a firm believer in the healing powers of creativity. She and her illustrating partner Courtenay Fletcher released their first book in 2012, forming their own indie publishing company Inner Flower Child Books with a mission to produce books to heal and inspire children of all ages. Bernardo is the award-winning author of Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs, a lyrical picture book about the enduring power of love. Her second book The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm (co-authored with LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow) helps families cope with traumatic events, and was sent via rocket to the International Space Station as part of the Storytime from Space program and also read aloud by First Lady Michelle Obama! Her third picture book, The Big Adventures of Tiny House, is the story of a recycled tiny house on wheels who sets off across America to find the meaning of home. She recently released her first novel, Inspired - the story of a 14-year-old girl named Rocket who discovers she is descended from Greek Muses and must balance middle school with magical Muse training. And most recently, she and Fletcher published a picture book biography titled The Artist Who Loved Cats: The Inspiring Tale of Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen, about the artist behind the iconic Le Chat Noir cabaret posters.
Bernardo is also a published poet, whose poem Tonic Waters about her mother-in-law s death was selected as the winning entry for The Cancer Poetry Project 2 anthology and read aloud at the 2014 World Cancer Day Concert. She makes her home in Los Angeles, with her sons, two cats, three chickens, a rambunctious terrier and a lot of love. When she is not writing, you might find her tidepooling, sculpting, gardening, browsing through a bookstore or museum, or traveling the world in search of her next inspiration!
About the Illustrator: Courtenay Fletcher, the illustrator of The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm and Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs, loves using images to tell a story - whether it is through photography, illustration or graphic design. She attended UC Berkeley, received her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and embarked on an exciting career as an art director in NYC and Chicago, eventually landing back home in California, where she lives with her family, a rescued mutt and a collection of tikis. She considers her daughter to be a constant source of inspiration.
Review:
There are a number of books written for children to try to help them through the bumpy passage of separation, divorce, or loss. I like Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs, by Susan Schaefer Bernardo and Courtenay Fletcher. This lovely picture book encourages children to explore the nature of love. The message is: No matter how far apart we are, I will always find a way to tell you I love you. Have tissues handy; this sweet and poignant message will resonate deeply with everyone. --Amy Dickinson, as appeared on June 3, 2018 in the Ask Amy syndicated advice column in 150 newspapers
Why I like this book: Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs is pure poetry and a visual feast for the eyes. Written and illustrated by two friends, Susan and Courtenay have taken a sad subject about separation and created a beautiful consoling book for children. It is written in dialogue, but is very lyrical and inspirational. It is the perfect book to use with children when they are dealing with separation from a parent because of deployment or job, loss, illness, divorce, and tragedy. The dialogue in the book gives kids the vocabulary to feel connected and to feel the presence of a loved one and it s all done through signs of nature. The illustrations are big, vibrant and breathtaking, and include children from all cultures. The book is simply beautiful! --Patricia Tilton, ChildrensBooksHeal website
