Before you can begin to understand what prayer can do or what happens when God's people pray, you need to believe in the Word of God. The Bible is our starting point. Jesus told the Sadducees, 'You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God' (Matthew 22:29).

Many of us only resort to praying when tragedy strikes. Serious prayer is usually driven by necessity. Prayer has become a spare tire. We only remember it when we get a flat. Is it possible that we don't pray because we don't understand the power of prayer? I hear people say, 'We've done all we can. The only thing we can do now is pray'. Or; 'When all else fails - pray!' But our best efforts should begin with prayer. Prayer should be our first response rather than our last resort. The church is constantly devising new methods and new plans to grow and spread the gospel. This trend of the day has a tendency to lose sight of the man or sink the man in the plan or organization. God's plan is to make much of the man, far more of him than of anything else. Men are God's method. The Church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. What the Church needs today is not more machinery or better methods but better men and women of prayer, like Elijah.

Our greatest need today is powerful, persistent, passionate, prevailing prayer. The need is far greater than most of us realize. My prayer is that this book will deepen your understanding of the power of prayer. I pray that you will become certain of what happens when you, a child of the Living God, pray.
