Winner of the Australasian CALEB Book Award for Best Children's Book 2010 Where Lions Roar at Night is an engaging book for the whole family to enjoy. It tells of the fun and adventures and dramas of a modern day 'pioneering' New Zealand family - the Booms.

Ten year old Milly had always dreamed of living in the country and owning all sorts of animals. So when her parents buy a piece of land and move their six children into a ninety-year-old barn, Milly can't believe her luck. But she never imagined that living the simple life would include mucking out a filthy water tank, gathering endless supplies of firewood, clearing the land and rescuing animals in a 'hundred year' storm. Nor did she expect to hear deep groanings in the night...

When the Boom family first moved to Whangarei, New Zealand and bought 11 acres of farm land, complete with an old barn, they never dreamed that the next two years would hold so much fun and so many memorable moments. As they began making the barn livable, putting in and tending the vegetable garden, clearing the land, they also faced the constant challenges that inevitably go hand in hand with a small block.

Author Rosie Boom lived in Papua New Guinea for three years during her childhood. Life was one great adventure, full of strange animals, tilley lanterns and river fun. She credits those exhilerating years with her on-going excitement at facing a challenge and enjoying having to 'rough it'. When she first laid eyes on the ancient barn, all she could think was, 'We could live here!'

In the first six months, they survived two 'one hundred year' storms. The barn creaked and shook and groaned, but outlasted the onslaught. They were exciting, nerve wracking days and nights of gale force winds, rain so loud on the tin roof that the family couldn't hear themselves shout, rescuing animals and anxiously watching to see if the barn roof would lift off.

Milly, the main character in the story, is the author's strong willed, feisty 12 year old. She is full of life and action, and is passionately fond of any sort of animal. In the first year of living on the land, Milly gathered a menagerie of pets - chickens, Indian Runner ducks, a pony and a milking cow to name a few.

In the gentle land of New Zealand there are no snakes, no wild animals and definately no wild lions. But on their first night in the barn as they all lay on mattresses on the loft floor, complete with mosquito nets, they were awoken by the eerie, wild sound of lions roaring. At first they doubted their ears, but soon realised they were hearing the roars from the nearby Zion Wildlife Gardens - home to a large number of big cats. A spine tingling sound in the middle of the night. The sound somehow encapsulated the exciting start to the family's new adventure and seemed to be a fitting title for Rosie Boom's book.

The author's hope is that Where Lions Roar at Nightwill cause people to reflect on the joy and wonder of family. And that the adults who read it will re-capture some of the wonder of childhood, while the children who enjoy the book will be inspired to never lose it.

Where Lions Roar at Night is published by HSM, Australia and is printed with a hard cover and green cloth spine; 228 pages and over 90 pen and ink illustrations.

Our family has always loved Little House on the Prairie. We never imagined we would discover another book we would love as much, especially a New Zealand one. Where Lions Roar at Night is hugely entertaining. Emily

About the Author:
Award winning author Rosie Boom lives with her husband Chris and their six children in Whangarei, New Zealand. In 2008 they moved onto a small lifestyle block, complete with river, huge native trees and an ancient ninety-year-old barn. They proceeded to make the barn liveable and tidy and clear the land. That done, they embarked on the challenging process of building their new family home. This has been a rewarding family project, with all the children, aged from 19 - 9 have helped with.

Rosie has homeschooled her children for 15 years. Her first book was published in 2001, and was in fact a school project. It is the re-telling of Oscar Wilde s The Happy Prince, with illustrations by her children and an accompanying CD which tells the story in a ten minute song. She is currently in the process of completing a four book series called The Gift of Values>: an inspirational and encouraging resource for parents to use with their children. Rosie offers personal glimpses into their own family life in an amusing and encouraging way, and has collected stories, inspirational quotes and creative ideas to help parents teach their children such values as honesty, perseverance and diligence.

Her latest book Where Lions Roar at Nightis a warm, family read aloud story which describes the fun and adventures the family has enjoyed during the first year of living in the barn. It has been described as New Zealand's very own Little House on the Prairie

Rosie spent her childhood in Papua, New Guinea, where her parents were missionaries. She remembers it as a magical, exciting time - one she wants to replicate for her own children.

After completing her nursing training, she went to Borneo as a missionary, prior to her marriage to Chris.

She and Chris are also singer/songwriters and have performed throughout N.Z and overseas for 21 years ( as long as they've been married!)

Rosie is a sought-after inspirational speaker at women's camps, missions conferences and home-schooling conferences. She writes and shares from her heart in a personal, humorous and challenging way.

Review:
"Life seen through the eyes of a 10-year-old exudes such a golden glow of possibility - and for young Milly Boom that golden glow has been faithfully, skillfully recreated in the pages of her Mum's novel.

Reading this hard-cover tale will have you reminiscing deep into the night; and for thiose of us who remember that unique blend of excitement and innocence from childhood favourites Little House on the Prairie and Swiss Family Robinson, those feelings of wonder will come flooding back.

In a world bursting with shock-value and fast-paced cheap thrills, this book is a simple piece of sunlit childhood.

Rosie, her husband Chris and their brood of six children live in Whangarei - not too far from Zion Wildlife Gardnes; hence the rather unusual title. Following the daily life of the Booms, we glimpse a modern-day pioneering childhood where high jinks and adventures abound. Gentle yet absorbing. Parents and children will enjoy reading this together at bedtime." --Emma Jelsema for Scene Magazine, Whangarei, NZ June 2009

Where Lions Roar at Nightis the story of a family who, having returned from Papua New Guinea set up home in an old barn on a small holding while they wait to build a proper home. In commendation of this book, a mother, Jenni Anderson writes, and I hope she won t mind me quoting her here her enthusiasm is infectious.

This book is a winner! We devoured it as a family read in less than a week. Many chores were left undone as my family pleaded for just one more chapter, Mum! again and again. We got to know each family member as a close friend, laughing at their antics, sharing their adventures with enthusiasm and their crises with bated breath.

This is the captivating, real life story of a Kiwi family that every reader would want to know and be a part of, a family who cares for each other and shares each other s triumphs and losses. It is about creativity, making the most of life's ups and downs, dancing in the puddles (or canoeing in floodwaters) on rainy days and living the great adventure with whatever is at hand.

Where Lions Roar at Night is more than the family biography that we ve been longing to read, it is an inspiration to families and readers of all ages. --Radio Rhema NZ Between the Covers 27th June 2009
