The Russian people have a profound attachment to their land.

Boris Pasternak paid tribute to the millions of dead who made the sacred land of Russia live again and blossom: ""The price Russia paid in blood, in sorrow, in tears increases Russians' love for their land. Writers, musicians and artists have all nourished their talent with the fruits of passion that lie deep at the root of the Russian soul.""

This book is designed to help the reader share in the discovery of the beloved Russian land. It includes paintings showing country gentlemen and sometimes serfs toiling like slaves until late 19th century, when they were liberated and at last were able to own property and harvest their crops.

This richly illustrated book reproduces paintings from the 18th through the 20th century. Pastoral moments, rural scenes and peasants' strained expressions reveal in vivid detail what life were like on the Russian land.

From Library Journal:
This beautifully produced volume celebrates the natural beauty and vastness of Russia as seen and painted by Russian artists. The volume opens with a chapter on why Russians developed their deep love of country and then discusses, briefly, major trends in Russian art. It then divides into the four seasons, with each section showing scenes of Russian village and city landscapes, highlighting the vastness and the astonishing variety of geography. "The Itinerants"Aartists such as Ivan Shiskin, Isaac Levitan, Vasily Surikov, and Ilya RepinAare well represented. The paintings are reproduced with careful attention to detail and faithfulness to original colors. It would have been helpful if the author had listed the size of every painting rather than only a few, and some sort of index and biographical information about the artists would have been nice. Still, this volume is a beautiful introduction to art about Russia by Russians. For public and academic libraries.AMartin Chasin, Adult Inst., Bridgeport, CT
