This latest volume in a series of short play anthologies compiled by Deb and Norman Bert provides roles for almost any mix of students in an acting class. The plays in this drama book range in mood from serious and heavy to satiric comedy and farce. The heart of the book includes 15 scripts for two actors and five scripts for three actors. All the plays are eight to 15 minutes long and offer balanced roles with no walk-on parts. The playwrights are icons of the American avant garde, writers who have contributed much to regional theatre over recent years. An excellent resource for classrooms and festival competition use, five monologues plus an extensive chapter about rehearsing add value to this book. A bibliography and guidelines on securing the rights to these scripts are also included.

About the Author:

Norman A. Bert earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University, specializing in dramatic theory and criticism. He teaches playwriting and dramatic analysis at Texas Tech University. He has been actively involved in the Playwriting Awards Committee of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and the Playwrights and Creative Teams Program of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. Norman has written over thirty play scripts, most of which have been published and/or produced, and has authored several books.
In recent years Norman has focused on writing short scripts centering on religious subject matter and social justice topics such as ethnic relations and poverty. He lives in Lubbock, Texas with his partner Amy Kim and their standard poodle Tutu.

Grade 7 Up-The short plays and monologues in this collection deal with many subjects-suicide, anorexia, abortion, mental illness, Vietnam, etc.-all topics that should evoke a high level of emotion from acting students. The selections range in effectiveness from the poignant "Mikey's Chair," in which a brother tries to come to terms with an accident that has left his sibling in a vegetative state, to the confusing "Clubs," which observes the lives of three childhood acquaintances over the course of time. There is some useful and affecting material here, but none of it is remarkable. Purchase only for collections specializing in the performing arts.
