About the Author:
James “Doc” Crabtree began his Army career in 1982 as a Hawk surface-to-air missile crewman and was later retrained to take his place in one of the first Patriot units then being formed. He applied to go to West Point Preparatory School (which was lost) and later applied for an Active-Duty ROTC Scholarship (which arrived AFTER he left the Army at the completion of his enlistment). Crabtree was commissioned in 1989 and was placed back on active duty just in time for Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia. He served as a Tactical Control Officer for a Hawk battery and operated a secret weapon attached to the Hawk called “Alpha.” All efforts to get Hughes Aircraft to admit they built this thing (it had their name stamped on the components) have been fruitless. When Desert Storm concluded Crabtree found himself in southern Iraq. Following Gulf War I Doc Crabtree went to Ohio to get a graduate degree in history and worked for a time at the U.S. Air Force Museum. During this period he wrote On Air Defense and Guerrilla Air Defense. He was asked to return to active duty in 1998 just in time to take part in Operation Desert Fox, which gave him the opportunity to visit Kuwait for the first time. Within a year he was off again, this time back to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Southern Watch. In 2003 Crabtree became a Public Affairs Officer and found himself in Iraq in 2005. The only time he was ever shot at was while he was serving in the U.S. Army as a PAO. Doc Crabtree’s next overseas assignment was in the Sinai, where he saw signs of the security situation there spinning out of control. He next went to Guantanamo Bay, where his detachment took care the pitifully few reporters interested in going to the detention facility following the election of President Obama. Throughout his Army career Doc Crabtree has enjoyed drawing cartoons and has written for Army publications. In addition to his first five books (one of which was found in bin Laden’s “library” during the raid that killed him) Crabtree intends to publish a book on the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and how the media loved to hate it until President Obama was elected.
