James and William were just children the day the Comanche raiding party came. When the raiders rode off, they took little William with them and left James alone with his mother—and a burning need for revenge. As the years passed, William was raised by the Comanche as their own, trained to become a fierce warrior and defender of his people. And James’s anger turned him into the most feared Indian killer on the frontier. Two brothers, once close, now worlds apart. Neither knows what the other has become, or even if he is still alive. But James will never forget his mother’s dying words: “Find your brother, no matter how long it takes.”

From Booklist:
In this tightly written western bearing some thematic similarities to Alan Le May’s classic The Searchers (1954), James Kensing, a top tracker, is hired to find Quanah Parker, a Comanche warrior. James has his own personal issues with the Comanche. Ten years earlier, when he was just a boy, two Comanche took his younger brother, William. Since then, James has been living out his mother’s dying wish that he look for his brother—and killing every Indian he encounters along the way. As James tracks Parker, a young Indian warrior, Runs Horses, is searching for the man the Comanche call tai-to-tovt—“white-man-black,” the Indian killer. He will be shocked to discover that his prey isn’t the man he thought he was, just as James will be shocked to discover a familiar face behind the young Indian’s seething hatred. A frequently moving novel, with a few surprises at the end. --David Pitt
