A Little Piece of Sky is the story of Song Byrd, an African American girl growing up in an impoverished Latino section of North Philadelphia. The story is divided into Morning, Noon, and Evening, sections which trace Song's youth, adolescence, and adulthood. Written in vignettes, the story details Song's feelings of isolation, her treatment by an "absent" single mother, her struggles with a drug-addicted sister, and her desire transcend her circumstances. Her way out comes after the murder of her mother when she goes to live with her father, who resides in the affluent section of West Mt. Airy. Although it is the change for which she had hoped, she is uncomfortable in her new environment, and she again struggles with feeling like she doesn't belong.
