After starting my own pediatric practice in 1973, I began my research in 1978 at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago by reading every published English language research article on sleeping in children.
It became clear that many children who do not sleep well also did not sleep well as babies and as babies, they fussed or cried much of the time. This lead to research on the causes of fussiness and crying in babies.
Also, it became clear that older children suffered in mood and performance from lack of sleep. Research linking academic and behavioral problems with poor sleeping in older children led me to the conclusion that good quality sleep is an unappreciated health habit. The best time to establish this habit is shortly after our babies are born. Sweet Baby How To Soothe Your Newborn lays this foundation for healthy sleep habits.
