From the Back Cover:
She had been famous as a racer before the Americans, Jesse Spalding III and Thomas Higgins II bought her. When World War II came along, it was inevitable that she would serve in it.

Her mission was to carry deadly cargoes of munitions and dynamite through the submarine infested waters of the Caribbean. This was made possible through her superior speed and maneuverability.

Spalding lovingly details the World War II adventures of the Bluenose. He also tells of life in Cuba, the home base of the Bluenose during the war. Cuba had a "Casablanca" atmosphere, with spies, celebrities and the wealthy all sharing in war struggles. Spalding tells intriguing stories about such figures as Ernest Hemingway and the Duke of Windsor. This book is more than a story of a great ship. It presents a fascinating panorama of a way of life that has vanished.

Andrew Higgins, the son of Spalding's partner, adds to the story with interviews of others who were involved. Andrew includes his own research as well as photos, documents and family letters that existed during the war. Andrew looks at the war time struggles of a great ship through the eyes of those involved.

Indeed the war years of Canada's Bluenose were spent making a fascinating and valuable difference in the allied war effort.

About the Author:
Andrew Higgins is the son of Thomas Higgins II, one of the Americans who owned the Bluenose during World War II. Andrew is a retired police officer who lives in Southern California. Andrew is the current President of the West Indies Trading Company.

Jesse Spalding III It would take the talents of his good friend, Ernest Hemingway, to properly describe the life of Jesse Spalding III. In fact, Spalding could quite easily have been a character in a Hemingway novel.

A complete sportsman, Spalding became a four letter man in school, achieving his letters in football, baseball and track. In track, he won the decathlon championship. Spalding's skills seemed to have run in his family, his father, himself and brother were all captains on football teams. At Yale he was a member of the 1935 undefeated freshman team.

After Yale, Spalding went on to new triumphs as a tennis player, being ranked nineteenth in the country. With his love of boats and his sporting proclivities, it was only natural that he took up game fishing.

After traveling widely, Spalding had settled down in Palm Beach, Florida, playing golf and trap shooting. Jesse Spalding III passed away during the summer of 1996.
