About the Author:
Professor Michael Herity teaches Archaeology at University College, Dublin, where he was Dean of celtic Studies from 1984 to 1990. A specialist in the irish Stone Age and its European background, and in the history of Irish antiquanarianism, he has also studied Celtic Royal Sites and the layout and features of Irish hermitages and monsteries.
Review:
Rathcroghan/Cruachan is still a focus of history and spirituality today. The site area extends for approximately 10 sq kilometres (4 sq miles), and contains up to 200 ancient earthworks, track-ways, standing stones, tombs, mounds and ring barrows, spanning over 6,000 years.
It has been proposed, after the study of the various ancient texts, that this whole citadel is the legendary court of Kings and Queens of Connacht, including the infamous Medb, the Warrior Queen.
Cruachan is at least as important as Tara, seat of the High Kings of Ireland. This is due to consistency of occupation here, through the ages, and the unique quality of preservation to be found throughout the sites. An equality with Newgrange is attested to in a poem found in the Book of the Dun Cow (Lebor na hUidre).
This book is an excellent and informative guide to the archaeology and history of this fascinating area in the heart of the West of Ireland. --Cruachan Ai Heritage Centre, Tulsk, Co Roscommon.
