Darcy’s Story reveals at last the truth about Jane Austen’s most famous hero, Fitzwilliam Darcy. "Pride and Prejudice" is the most popular romantic novel in the world, yet it says little about how Darcy is changed from a "haughty, reserved and fastidious" young man to the ardent and humble suitor for the hand of Jane Austen’s delightful heroine, Elizabeth Bennet. "The New Illustrated Darcy’s Story" reveals what you always wanted to know about Jane Austen's hero, and the book is enhanced by more than 55 prints by the Victorian artist Hugh Thomson. Like many other people, the author Janet Aylmer first read "Pride and Prejudice" whilst she was at school, as did her children, and have enjoyed reading the novel again many times since then. It was after watching the BBC television serial in 1995, and discussing it with one of her daughters, that Janet's curiosity was re-awakened about Mr Darcy, and she decided to write this book. Everyone who has read and enjoyed Jane Austen's novel has their own particular favourite passages in the book, and she used many of hers in Darcy's Story. As her novel was first published in several "parts", she also used quotations from "Pride and Prejudice" to introduce each of the seven parts in her book. Everyone who has ever read Jane Austen's novel will have their own idea of Mr Darcy's side of the story, and this book could be described as looking through the mirror of "Pride and Prejudice" from the other side. Janet Aylmer is delighted that a story written nearly 200 years ago can still give pleasure in a very different era. She has also been glad to learn that people much more knowledgeable than she is about Jane Austen and her work have also liked the book. Janet has been surprised and delighted to discover that her need to know more about Jane Austen's hero is shared by people in more than 40 other countries all around the world. The publishers have received many letters and emails expressing the enjoyment that so many people have found in reading "Darcy’s Story". It seems that complementing "Pride and Prejudice" by writing this book has satisfied a long-felt need for many readers.
