Gr 7 Up--A thorough and authoritative look at the chronic lung disorder that affects millions of Americans. Beginning with a brief outline of its characteristics and effects, the authors then trace the history of asthma, its treatments, and theories about its causes. The information is clear and concise, with sufficient detail and background supplied. Diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and a consideration of societal and environmental impacts and projected research round out the presentation. Photographs and diagrams enhance the text. The Silversteins' volume is a good update to Mona Kerby's Asthma (Watts, 1989; o.p.), and offers more information than Margaret O. Hyde and Elizabeth H. Forsythe's Living with Asthma (Walker, 1995). Carolyn Simpson's Coping with Asthma (Rosen, 1995) takes a more proactive stance for asthma sufferers and has a more personal voice and approach to the topic.
