Academic Preparation in Social Studies: Teaching for Transition from High School to College - Softcover

This book is a sequel to Academic Preparation for College: What Students Need to Know and Be Able to Do, which was published in 1983 by College Board's Educational Equality Project. Now widely known as the Green Book, it outlined the knowledge and skills students need in order to have a fair chance at succeeding in college. With this book we take a step beyond Academic Preparation for College by providing suggestions about how the outcomes described in the Green Book might be achieved. The suggestions are from hundreds of educators in every part of the country they are based to a great extent on actual, successful high school programs. These books not only focus on achieving the outcomes for a particular subject described in the Green Book but also on how study of that subject can develop the Basic Academic Competencies. The learning central to each subject has a central role to play in preparing students for successful work in college. That role ought not be neglected in a rush to equip students with more general skills. There are also connections among the Basic Academic Subjects that this book is mindful of. For example in the teaching of social studies involves mathematics not only as a tool but as a mode of thought. The Editor's state that "It is our greatest hope that this book and its companions will be used as a reference points for dialogues between high school and college teachers."
