From Booklist:
Gr. 7-12. This updated edition adds six new chapters to Facklam's Healing Drugs: The History of Pharmacology (1992). The result is an excellent historical survey based on the most recent material available on the research and development of pharmaceutical drugs. Subjects include the inventors of new healing drugs, the research and testing used to make these drugs safe for human consumption, the role of the Federal Drug Administration in regulating the drug industry, and the economics of the pharmaceutical industry. Beginning with a chapter on ancient remedies, the authors trace the development of healing drugs, citing historical milestones such as antibiotics, antihistamines, herbs and herbal remedies, hormone and steroid therapy, painkillers, and vaccinations. Complementing the text are numerous black-and-white photographs, charts, and tables. Appendixes include a bibliography, a glossary, and recommended Web sites. Straightforward, sensibly organized, and well researched, this volume in the Science and Technology in Focus series is an excellent introduction. Ed Sullivan
