Entries are arranged in alphabetical order. Each one- to two-page article begins with the woman's major accomplishments, then traces her life, and ends with a short list of additional reading. The reader gets a taste of each personality but will not derive all the information needed for in-depth research. About 10 percent of the articles include black-and-white images of the subjects. The treatment is generally benign, so controversies such as Tootsie Roll president Ellen Gordon's move of her factory to Canada are not covered.
The volume ends with a bibliography of recommended sources on the topic, a list of articles sorted by career field, a chronological list, and an index. A list by ethnicity would have been useful. The business fields tend to cluster around traditional female interests: appearance, family products, communications. However, manufacturing (including aviation and technology), construction, and shipping are also represented.
Providing an accessible introduction to U. S. businesswomen, this resource should find a broad audience in high-school, academic, and public libraries. RBB
