K-Gr 2--This series is packed with facts about the five senses, almost approaching information overload for first books, but all of the material is interesting and copiously illustrated. Besides the usual diagrams and explanations, Hearing includes noise pollution and echoes; Seeing introduces topics such as blindness, stereoscopic vision, and microscopes and telescopes. Touching touches on anesthesia and sensory emotions; Smelling and Tasting mentions unusual animal noses. Although the format is somewhat cluttered, the mix of photographs and realistic artwork is attractive. The examples chosen are varied, with people of all ages and ethnic groups; exotic animals; scenes of cities, sports, and laboratories; closeups and overall views; and bright colors. Clear, simple declarative sentences and captions are well related to the pictures.
