"Nicely illustrated companion catalog to the exhibition of the same title held at the Brooklyn Museum, N.Y. (March 1-July 14, 1996), Phoenix Art Museum (Dec. 14, 1996-Feb. 23, 1977), and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (March 30-June 8, 1997) explores the evolution of Spanish American viceroyalties of New Spain (Mexico) and Peru through 250 works including paintings, sculptures, costumes, textiles, furniture, domestic and religious objects, as well as illustrated manuscripts. Scholarly essays by various authors examine issues of identity as expressed and reflected in a wide range of objects and images representative of indigenous contributions and European imported culture. Individual entries for the works of art provide basic data on provenance, date, medium, and dimensions"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.http://www.loc.gov/hlas/

From Library Journal:
Following an extensive project to unite colonial Latin American works that were originally gathered in the 1940s and 1950s but are now dispersed throughout the Brooklyn Museum's collections, this exhibition catalog describes and documents the effects of European artistic traditions after being transported to the New World. Fine art and everyday objects are examined from the pre-Columbian period through the 19th century. Essays by eight scholars focus on specific aesthetic issues arising from the transformations in artistic production that took place in the viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru. As a whole, they address the essential issue: how much did these widely divergent cultures blend and separate to make colonial art? New research findings are reinterpreted and applied to traditional assumptions; the resulting revisionist conclusions make this a significant addition to academic and specialized collections covering colonial Latin America.?Paula A.
