Sidebars appear on each page, along with full-color photographs and illustrations that illuminate the superstitions, customs, and daily life of the period. Diane Stanley's Joan of Arc (Morrow, 1998) is more detailed. For younger readers, Margaret Hodges's Joan of Arc (Holiday, 1999) and Josephine Poole's Joan of Arc (Knopf, 1998) are preferable for their picture-book qualities of layout, design, and painterly illustrations.
