Grade 1-3?In this slight, realistic story with a fanciful setting, Princess Josie wants a dog but her parents, the ruling monarchs, think she's too young to care for one. Throughout the short chapters, the eight year old develops responsible behavior by helping a stableboy take care of a sickly kitten, owning up to a library book she left in the rain, and nursing her injured brother's lame horse. In the end, her parents tell Josie she can have anything her heart desires. Well, this girl with 42 party dresses opts for a dog, a horse, and a kitten as well. Bluthenthal's frequent line drawings of Josie bring Hilary Knight's Eloise to mind. Unfortunately, the stable hand speaks in an unnecessary, unexplained dialect that drops letters ("she'll need ya agin tomorra") that will be difficult for novice readers.
