This critical edition of the novel "Sab" (published in 1840 in Madrid) is based on the Cuban printing of the 1970s. It is of particular interest not only because of its aesthetic qualities but also because it addresses issues of interest both for the period in which it was written and contemporary audiences. Among these topics are slavery, basic rights of the individual in society, nationalism, and women's issues. A further challenge for critics is the classification of the author, within the Latin American or Spanish canon, because she spent much of her life in Europe. Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda is attracting the attention of many scholars in the late-20th century, and her novel "Sab" is considered basic reading for courses in Latin American literature in general and on women writers specifically.

About the Author:

Gertrudis G�mez de Avellaneda (Camag�ey, 1814-Madrid, 1873). Cuba. Era hija de un oficial de la marina espa�ola y de una cubana. Escribi� novelas y dramas y fue actriz. Estudi� franc�s y ley� mucho, sobre todo autores espa�oles y franceses. Tras una corta estancia en Burdeos, vivi� un a�o en La Coru�a y despu�s en Sevilla, donde conoci� a Ignacio Cepeda, con quien tuvo un romance. Por esta �poca ejerci� el periodismo y estren� su primer drama. Su creciente prestigio literario le permiti� establecer amistad con Espronceda y Zorrilla. Poco despu�s se cas� con Pedro Sabater, quien muri� tres meses m�s tarde. Tras un retiro conventual, la Avellaneda volvi� a Madrid y, entre 1846 y 1858, estren� al menos trece obras dram�ticas. Hacia 1853 quiso entrar en la Academia Espa�ola, pero se le neg� por ser mujer. En 1855 se cas� con el coronel Domingo Verdugo, conocida figura pol�tica que en 1858 fue v�ctima de un atentado. M�s tarde �ste fue nombrado para un cargo oficial en Cuba. Entonces la Avellaneda dirigi� en La Habana la revista �lbum cubano de lo bueno y de lo bello (1860). Su marido muri� en 1863 y ella se fue a los Estados Unidos. Estuvo en Londres y Par�s y regres� a Madrid en 1864. Durante los cuatro a�os siguientes vivi� en Sevilla. Utiliz� el seud�nimo de La peregrina.
