This book in the Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Careers series may focus on careers, but it gets off to a vivid start as Souter describes the Secret Service's protection of President Bush during a trip to New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. Throughout the book, sidebars focus on some of the more dramatic moments in Secret Service history, including the assassination of JFK and the attempts on the lives of Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. But the book covers more than moments of high drama. It also discusses two agencies--the U.S. Secret Service, charged with protecting the president and other government officials, and the Federal Protective Service, which guards federal properties and investigates criminal activities that involve those properties--giving the history of both agencies, outlining their charges, and explaining the responsibilities of agency officers. It also amply covers the process involved in obtaining employment. The information is attractively presented, with many full-color photographs adding appeal.
