Greece (Cultures of the World)

Grade 5-8-An attractive, lively, and perceptive look at Greece. Although basically the same in format and information as the 1992 edition, the text has been revised and updated, the chapter headings are bolder and modernized, and at least half the photos are new. Additions include several recipes, an extensive time line, a larger index, a short chapter on environmental concerns, a good list of resources, a better topographical map, and two spreads on the country's economy and culture with illustrative maps and salient facts on each subject. Sections on the people and government have been changed to reflect recent trends, as has the feature on the European Union. The book's outstanding virtue is its ability to capture the essential character of the people in its thoughtful discussion of the Greek family, philotimo (the concept of hospitality to strangers), and especially in the full-page discussion of gestures in the chapter on language. Ann Heinrichs's Greece (Children's, 2002) is one of the few books that can compete with this one. Libraries wanting updated, comprehensive material both for reports and for general knowledge need look no further.
