This work covers the whole of northern England, west of the Pennines, from the River Lune to the River Eden. The author begins with the Lakes, the most famous tourist region in Great Britain, and goes on to deal with Carlisle and the Eden Valley, the Solway, Morecambe Bay, East Westmoreland and Lancashire, north of the River Lune. These are like the "outer suburbs" of Lakeland, and owe much of their personality and history to the presence of the nearby mountains.
