PreSchool-Grade 1-The large and sometimes scary unknown of a park playground is the setting for a dream fantasy about a family of gentle lions that live among the climbing platforms and slides. When evening comes and Martin's protective mother won't let him climb all the way to the top of the "giant jungle ladder," he dreams of visiting the playground by himself in the night. There he climbs with the lion cub that gathers a bit of cloud in the boy's sand bucket, and they roar together across the bridges. Sayles's full-page pastel illustrations are suffused with muted pink and orange, giving Martin's dream landscape a cozy feeling. The lions, cartoonlike and unthreatening, speak in dreamy poetry ("'What's for breakfast?' asked giant lion cub. 'Unfallen rain,' said giant lion dad"). This book lacks the power and intuitive punch of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (HarperCollins, 1988), but may resonate with children who long to try out their wild sides.
