Troy is a boy living in a secret locked-up world. His family thinks he is crazy, mad, nutty, barmy - all except his mother, who prefers to pretend there's nothing really wrong. Even she has to take notice when policemen start knocking on doors and Troy gets excluded from school.

About the Author:
Gene Kemp grew up near Tamworth in the Midlands. She studied at Exeter University, taught, married and had three children. She is best-known for her Cricklepit School stories, including The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler - a winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Children's Rights Award, Charlie Lewis Plays for Time, which was runner-up for the Whitbread Award in 1985, and Just Ferret, which was a runner-up for the Smarties Award in 1990. In addition, she has written The Clock Tower Ghost, Jason Bodger and the Priory Ghost (short stories) and a poetry anthology. She also writes for TV and radio. In 1984 she was awarded an honorary degree for her books, which have been translated into numerous languages.
From AudioFile:
Middle-child Clare is always helpful at home, especially with her brother, who is "seriously weird." Troy is brilliant at numbers, but the rest of his life is difficult, a constant problem and embarrassment for his family. Narrator Lisa Coleman skillfully presents the family members and many frustrated neighbors, teachers, and even police who must cope with Troy. Particularly well rendered is Clare, who has her own life and friends but never forgets Troy and his need for understanding. Despite its unrealistic ending, this is an excellent title to teach children about tolerance for kids different from themselves.
