A Dazzling Charade

Lady Lily Walters played her part to perfection. At glittering balls and fashionable soirees, her low-cut gowns and empty chatter kept everyone from guessing the truth -- that this sensuous flirt was really a spy. Willingly, she risked her life to pass on vital secrets only she could divulge. But when the dangerously attractive Duke of Remmington took her in his arms, she found herself wishing that just once she could drop her masquerade and show him the woman she really was....

A Dangerous Desire

To Remmington, a man whose secrets and scars ran deep, Lady Lily was one more beautiful woman to be enjoyed and discarded...until he found her running in terror through the London streets. Suddenly he knew that there was more to this alluring woman than she let on. He didn't know why her life was in danger; he only knew that he had to protect her. Yet when he forced her to take shelter in his town house, he would compromise her honor and do something far worse -- unleash their passion in a world of war and intrigue, where the greatest danger of all was in daring to love.

About the Author:
Elizabeth Elliott took a turn off the corporate fast track to write romances on the shores of a lake not far from Woebegone. She is the author of The Warlord, Scoundrel, Betrothed, and The Dark Knight.
Review:
Lady Lillian Walters is an agent for the War Department and she deciphers codes sent by agents from France. But no one would ever suspect her of leading this intriguing and dangerous life. From all outward appearances, Lady Lillian is a beautiful, empty headed, sociable young lady of the ton. Only her best friend, Sophia Stanhope, knows about her secret life and about her secret love for the Duke of Remmington, Miles Montague. One night, Remmington asks her to dance and she realizes he has a motive for dancing with her, and Lily feels used and humiliated. Later that same night Lady Lillian is attacked in her home but she escapes her assailant and runs into the street. She is rescued by Remmington and later they go to her house to inspect it and they find her father, tied and gagged. Lord Croford and Remmington decide that until they can find out who is trying to kill Lady Lillian, she will stay at Remmington's. Their mutual attraction evolves and escalates, but Lily must not let her guard down. While at the home of Lord Holybrook, an intruder on the grounds shoots through a window and Remmington assumes the target is Lily. That night Lily and Remmington meet in his bedchamber to discuss it, but they allow their emotions to take over and they get caught. They marry and the next morning another attempt is made on Lily's life, but Remmington rescues her and kills her attacker. Feeling safe, they all let down their guard where Lily's safety is concerned, but Remmington puts up his guard against falling in love with her. As they settle into their everyday life, Remmington becomes more removed from Lily. He is afraid to admit to himself and to her that his whole life revolves around her. By the time a talk with his brother makes him see the light, however, it may already be too late. Lily is abducted by the real murderer and only a coded message to her father can save her life.Elizabeth Elliot writes terrific novels! Scoundrel is a triumph for Ms. Elliott! For an interesting, absorbing and entertaining romance, Scoundrel can't be beat! Ms. Elliott could have called this, The Spy Who Loved Me, but this spy is a Scoundrel! I love reading Elizabeth Elliott's work! The Warlord was a superb debut novel and Scoundrel is stunning!Gloria Miller -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc.
