Written with Vicount Tonypandy's support and co-operation, this biography is of the major public figure - George Thomas, who rose from the poverty of the South Wales Valleys to become Speaker of the House of Commons. George Thomas's cry "order, order" was a much loved and oft-quoted feature of Parliament, and his role as Speaker of the Commons brought him to the attention of the nation. Yet, his life prior to that role was rich in political activity and his Christian faith backed his strong socialist principles. After retirement, he keenly supported the work of his favourite charity, National Children's Homes, and won the heart of the British people through his courageous battle against throat cancer. He remains a popular figure and has never forgotten his Welsh Valley roots. E.H. Robertson is the author of "The Shame and the Sacrifice".

Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Paperback Printing. Paperback. Slight crease to corner back cover. Slight browning to edges of pages through age. Slightly sunned spine. George Thomas' early life was spent in dire poverty, yet he was born with two great privileges: a dedicated and determined mother, and the community resilience and warmth of the South Wales Rhonda Valley. These twin influences instilled into Tonypandy's most famous son a passionate integrity which was to characterize his outstanding career, at the same time enablinf him to achieve a unique popularity. His sparkling wit, his famous voice and the great dignity he brought to his role as Speaker of the House of Commons made him synonymous with that office for an entire generation. This compelling biography provides a rare and telling portrait of a warm, gregarious, irrepressible character, still capable of a fiery passion and, whom, in his own words, 'even the children' call George. Illustrated. 448 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
