McClintock describes the home-building kits available from 75 U.S. manufacturers, devoting one or two pages to each. A typical entry, based on literature supplied by the company, includes a black-and-white photograph of the finished house, product line, prefab components, materials, size, cost, and special features. Relatively few floor plans are given. Another drawback is the lack of any discussion of the general benefits and disadvantages of mass-produced housing. Potential home kit buyers may find this book helpful, but most would do better to consult A. M. Watkins's The Complete Guide to Factory-Made Houses ( LJ 6/1/80) for its consumer information and directory of over 200 builders.
