From Library Journal:
Editor of Medical Self-Care magazine, Castleman has collected information from many different perspectives on the prevention and cure of colds. He includes information on homeopathic, herbal, Chinese, and traditional American therapy for this illness. His chapters on pregnancy and childhood cold symptoms and complications are very helpful. He also reports on various cold viruses, over-the-counter remedies, and current medical research. He provides several herbal therapies, describes the use of acupressure to relieve cold symptoms, and covers the importance of vitamin C, zinc, and chicken soup. Medical self-help and holistic medicine author Ford promises 18 ways to beat the common cold (but he doesn't seem to come up with that many). He presents chapters on herbal remedies, vitamins, minerals, and diet modifications designed to assist the immune system in fighting the cold virus. He emphasizes positive thinking and relaxation therapies, and covers use of over-the-counter cold remedies and aspirin, as well as recent medical research discoveries. The old regimen of rest, fruit juices, and soup still seems to be the treatment of choice. Although Ford's and Castleman's books cover similar information, if only one were purchased, Castleman's would be the better choice for most public libraries.
