Hoyt, the author of numerous studies of World War II, capably relates the intriguing life and times of Yamamoto and exlores the thinking of this complex man who, in spite of his role at Pearl Harbor, had profound misgivings about Japan's chances in a war against the United States. The admiral has been the subject of at least three English-language biographies (including John Deane Potter's Yamamoto: The Man Who Menaced America, LJ 2/15/66. o.p.). Hoyt, however, adds detail and color to the earlier studies. Scholars of the Pacific War will find little here, but Hoyt's books have wide popular appeal. There is a meager bibliography.
