About the Author:
ELIZABETH WEIN was born in New York and grew up in England, Jamaica, and Pennsylvania. She has her pilot's license, and it is her love of flying that partly inspired the idea for both Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire.
Review:
“Wein returns to Africa, the setting of her Lion Hunters series, with protagonists who share an avocation with those in her award-winning novels “Code Name Verity” and “Rose Under Fire”. Wein brings this fascinating period in history to life with several well-engineered plot twists, lots of high-flying, nail-biting tension, and meticulous research.” —Publishers Weekly
"From the author of the gripping yet heartbreaking Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire, comes an original coming-of-age novel. . . . this book is extraordinarily compelling."
―The Guardian (UK)
"Wein's novel is full of wonderful surprises. She does not shrink from confronting the large, difficult themes that are an integral part of the historical moment she is recounting: racism, war, colonialism, slavery, citizenship and religion. That she manages to handle all of these themes with such grace is admirable. Wein has always known how to spin a plot—and in Black Dove White Raven she does not disappoint. But most important, she knows how to create characters the reader cares about."
―The New York Times Book Review
“In the realm of young adult novels, it’s hard to beat Elizabeth Wein for originality, substance and sheer surprisingness—and Black Dove, White Raven includes all of this, easily matching Wein’s earlier, much-lauded, Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire. [A] mix of adventure, suspense and ‘real life’ historical setting. . . . And the story’s all the more formidable for the artistry and warmth with which it’s all put together. But most compelling are the two heroic teens whose courage, skill and psychological tenacity are both realistic and irresistibly admirable. Highly recommended.”
―Toronto Star
"Code Name Verity was always going to be a hard act to follow. But [Wein’s] latest offering, Black Dove, White Raven . . . secures her place as an exceptional voice in the YA genre."
―The Independent (UK)
"Wein does again what she did so beautifully in Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire: She plaits together the historical record, her passion for flying and ferociously vivid characters to create a heartbreaking adventure that grounds readers in the moment even as geopolitical complexity threatens to knock them off their feet. . . . Unforgettable."
