Grade 9-12 Jamie Carr, who danced the male lead in a ballet production in Ure's What If They Saw Me Now? (Delacorte, 1984), is back in a similar role. He has decided to quit school, get a job by day and attend a prestigious ballet school's evening classes. Ure addresses sex-role stereotyping of male dancers adroitly, as Jamie triesnot always successfullyto identify his colleagues as being gay or straight. He shares a room with one of his schoolmates and learns that while he has been trying to initiate a sexual relationship with some of the girls he has met, Steven has been trying to develop a relationship with him. Juggling his schedule, the demands of his parents and friends and his own yearnings for a true girlfriend, are the substantive elements in this story. Jamie's learning the sense and nonsense of his present and future, his friends and career, is developed through characters who are likable and often quite engaging.
