Jesse James was a fabled outlaw, a charismatic, spiritual, larger-than-life bad man whose bloody exploits captured the imagination and admiration of a nation hungry for antiheroes. Robert Ford was a young upstart torn between dedicated worship and murderous jealousy, the "dirty little coward" who coveted Jesse's legend. The powerful, strange, and unforgettable story of their interweaving paths—and twin destinies that would collide in a rain of blood and betrayal—is a story of America in all her rough, conflicted glory and the myths that made her.

From AudioFile:
Ron HansenŐs novel chronicles the lives and times of Jesse James and Robert Ford, the sycophantic young outlaw who eventually shot Jesse in the back. In HansenŐs quest for period accuracy, the early chapters are slow going, but G. Valmont ThomasŐs narration is strong enough to overcome the heavy exposition. ThomasŐs shaded characterizations provide fascinating human insights into the legend of Jesse. The author reveals details of the gunslingerŐs personality--he used potions, and was superstitious and vain. JesseŐs relationship with Zee is described as well--from courtship to marriage. HansenŐs habit of ŇverbingÓ nouns gets annoying (Ňwristed with lace,Ó Ňsnailed across the roadÓ), but ThomasŐs performance is so appealing--with his mellifluous tones; honest, uncluttered delivery; and perfect diction--that listeners wonŐt mind. Thomas makes this an audiobook you wonŐt want to miss. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
