From Publishers Weekly:
Leckie ( Delivered from Evil ) is a skillful guide through the daunting complexities of the American Civil War. His descriptions of battles and campaigns, from Fort Sumter to the post-Appomattox surrender of Gen. Joe Johnston's rebel remnant, enable readers to visualize the action and follow the overall strategy on land, sea and inland waterways. His brief portraits of the principal civilian and military leaders, both North and South, are colorful and lively: Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, for one, is described as "five feet full of bounce, brilliance, and belligerence." Perhaps the book's most noteworthy accomplishment is its clarifying examination of slavery in the South, showing how the national controversy over the system shifted from the economic to the moral plane and why the dispute became insoluble by peaceful means. Readers won't find a finer one-volume popular introduction to the War Between the States.

From Library Journal:
In a book surprisingly and wholly uninformed by the "new military history" and the significant recent work on the Civil War, Leckie recounts a schoolbook story of battles and leaders, with much attention devoted to Gettysburg (three chapters), less to Western engagements, and virtually nothing to the common soldier, the war at home, or the meaning of the great conflict. He has raked up many old chestnuts about Lincoln, Grant, and company, and cast them in a lively, anecdotal narrative. But to learn about the making and meaning of the war, readers should turn to James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom (LJ 3/1/88; one of LJ 's "Best Books of 1988") and Phillip Paludan's A People's Contest (HarperCollins, 1988), or, indeed, any of the classic accounts by Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote, Peter Parish, or Bell Wiley. --Randall M. Miller, St. Joseph's Univ., Philadelphia
